I am having a problem with my gutters.
Built in box gutters.
Built in or box gutter.
Most commonly the systems were built into the eaves edge or cornice of the roofing system.
Essentially a sloped wooden box is constructed then lined with metal.
Unlike aluminum gutters they are part of the roof structure.
Box gutters consist of wood framing with a sheet metal lining usually copper stainless steel or galvanized steel.
Unfortunately being unseen often results in neglect.
In many cases however a built in or box gutter may be what your house originally had and what it should have now.
Historical use of built in gutters places of worship.
K style gutters for houses built after 1950.
I have a mid century 1952 single story house with an all but flat roof slight pitch very slight and the gutters are not carrying the water all the way along the gutters to the downspout.
There is more information on this later.
Perhaps the first use of built in gutter systems was seen in old churches or other places of worship.
Since they are not readily visible they typically don t alter the historic character of buildings and don t detract from or conceal decorative cornice details.
The k style gutter is an adaptation from a design based on the classical orders of design.
