I did have to run the wood through my table saw to thin it out just a hair so that it was the same thickness as the tile.

So once the fireplace was framed out and the built in cabinetry installed we had two feet of drywall on the left side of the windows and about 6 visible on the right. In the first house the plans didn t account for the depth of the fireplace or built ins on the fireplace wall. Step 2 cut the metal lath with a utility knife to fit inside the painter s tape so the dimensions of the fireplace are covered both against the wall and on the floor. One we had wall one secured to the exterior wall we started building our second wall.

I used 1 x 4 pine wood around the tile and mitered it in the corners. It sticks out about 8 inches from the exterior. Building a fireplace mantel is a great beginner building project that anyone can handle. This is also a budget project that you can do for just 50 and in a few hours time.
